Desktop Video News #051: What's A Dual-Layer DVD? February 03, 2009 |
Welcome to this edition of Desktop Video News. In this issue, we'll be talking about codecs and why it's important to 'stay in your plane' when filming a digital video. Enjoy the newsletter!
Term Of The WeekDual-Layer DVD - A Dual-Layer DVD is different from a standard DVD because it has a second physical layer within the disc itself. To read this type of disc, you need a drive with dual layer capability. The drive will access the second layer by directing the laser through the first semi-transparent layer. The advantage of a dual layer DVD is that it is available on DVD-R and DVD+R disc format and can record up to 8.5 GB per disc, much more than the 4.7 GB on single-layer discs.
Tip Of The WeekIf you've taken shots of the same subject from multiple camera angles, then proceed to edit the scene together, try to remember the 45 Degree Rule. This rules says that you should always try to use shots that are looking at the subject from at least a difference of 45 degrees. This prevents the shots from being too similar and appearing like a jump cut to the audience.
