Desktop Video News #059: Use Manual Focus For Shooting Video
September 13, 2011

Welcome to this edition of Desktop Video News. In this issue, we'll be talking about the video storyboard and why you should use manual focus when shooting videos.

Term Of The Week: Storyboard

In video production, a storyboard is a series of cartoonlike panels drawn to describe a movie, shot by shot. In video editing, a storyboard is an interface that allows you to organize the sequential flow of your production by arranging thumbnails of each video clip.

Tip Of The Week: Use Manual Focus For Shooting Video

As you become more proficient with shooting videos, it is useful to learn how to use manual focus. I find beginners like to use automatic focus to save time when shooting videos. However, as a professional, you should avoid using it if possible, because you will inevitably get “focus hunting”, with the camera constantly switching focus from one plane to another.

Switch the camera to manual focus and get into the habit of using the following technique on every shot - zoom in all the way on the subject, pull focus, then pull back to get the framing you want. In this way, focus will be perfect, because the longest end of the zoom has the smallest depth of field tolerance.
