5 Tips For Better
Basketball Video Editing

Here's an interesting perspective for you - basketball video editing. You know those basketball games you watch on TV? Where they show a player do a slam dunk or some tricky move near the hoop? Well, they are in fact edited by professionals who know they way around video editing software.

If you want to clean up or produce a video showing a basketball game, these are the folks you need to approach.

I first knew of this because I have a friend who is a professional basketball player. He needed to have some video shots of his game recorded on DVD and sent to coaches. Easier said than done! Why? Because basketball games are full of action and extremely tough to shoot and record on video. You have to be very alert when shooting a game.

Learn a few tips to improve your basketball video editing skills

I picked up some cool tips on basketball video editing while helping my friend out. The most important thing is to shoot a good video so that your video editing work will be easier. So here are the tips:

1. Shoot in Short Play Mode

One of the more important things about shooting a great basketball video is to capture in high quality. You can always edit the video later, but if your original video shot is of poor quality, there's nothing much you can do even if you're a genius at video editing.

One important tips is to avoid Long Play mode - use Short Play mode - which gives you much better video quality. If you're worried about running out of storage space on the tape or memory card, just make sure you bring extra storage or pause the video during extra time, or free throws, etc. You should also click here to learn more about shooting good video.

2. Use A Tripod

Always aim to use a tripod if you want your video to turn out well in the basketball video editing session. A tripod clears up video tremble - A LOT. Cheap ones work just a good as expensive ones in terms of stability but expensive ones could be better for panning across the court. Look for a tripod that has a fluid head, where the movement is smoothed out by fluid in the head of the tripod. One of the better tripod models I like can be found here.

3. Don't Use Auto-Focus

Yes, this can be a hassle, but you'll thank your stars you did this when you're doing basketball video editing. Why do you do this? Because it creates a better quality shot. Set up as close to half court as you can, switch to manual focus, zoom into a player at each end of the court, focus, then zoom out.

What this does is assures all action on both ends of the court will be in focus without ever losing focus. Center court may be a tad out of focus, but most action is at the ends anyway. Remember to refocus at the start of every quarter to keep quality sharp.

4. Zoom In and Stay In

Zoom in with your camcorder enough to where only about two-thirds of the court is visible (baseline to just above the three-point line). This will drastically improve the clarity of the players.

5. Use A Good Video Editing Software

One of the most important tips for basketball video editing is to use good software. Don't go for a cheap commercial software, go for something decent like Corel VideoStudio or even Adobe Premiere Pro (especially if you're a professional editor). The options available in the better packages make a world of difference in the output video.

I hope the above helps you understand what goes into basketball video editing. In summary, the most critical thing is to shoot a good video, so that your editing work is much easier. You also need a good video editing program.
