Hitachi DZ-MV580A
DVD Camcorder Review

If you are looking for a top of the line video camcorder, the Hitachi DZ-MV580A DVD camcorder should definitely be on your list of camcorders to check out.

The Hitachi DZ-MV580A DVD camcorder is one of the latest DVD camcorders available today.

It may be the second most expensive camcorder on the market, but it seems to come in first place when you are looking for a powerful full featured, user friendly camcorder.

 The Hitachi DZ-MV580A DVD camcorder

Design and Construction

The Hitachi DZ-MV580A is approximately 2.5 x 3.5 x 5.75 inches, and weighs only 1 pound, 2 ounces. The camera is small enough to hold easily in one hand, similar to a regular 35mm camera. It features a 2.5 inch swiveling LCD screen, and has a hot shoe for an external light.

The camcorder is very compact, but user controls are easily accessible. The Hitachi DZ-MV580A seems to be designed with the user in mind, with the exception of the battery that sticks out of the back of the camcorder.

Optics and Resolution

The Hitachi DZ-MV580A features 10x optical zoom, and 240x digital zoom. It also has a 113,000 pixel color viewfinder. The resolution of the Mega Pixel CCD sensor allows for 1280 x 960 pixel photos, which surpasses what is required for high quality video.

The camcorder features an aspherical lens with the high quality precision optics. Hitachi's DZ-MV580 DVD camcorder CCD houses 400k effective pixels for video and 960k effective pixels for still pictures. The focal length is 38. In bright light, the Hitachi DZ-MV580A DVD camcorder produces images with sharp, well balanced colors, and it is the best camcorder for low-light situations.

User Controls

The Hitachi DZ-MV580A DVD Camcorder is very user friendly. It features a quick mode menu for easy operation, and for DVD recording, you can easily have direct access to particular scenes using the quick mode menu.

The quick mode menu also allows the user to have in-camera editing features. Settings for exposure, focus, white balance, and shutter speed are all accessible through the quick mode menu. These features can be controlled automatically as well. Preset settings include Spotlight, Portrait, Sports, Sand & Snow, and Low Light. All controls are easily accessible, and a remote control is included as well.

Storage and Transfer

The Hitachi DZ-MV580A uses an SD/MMC memory card. It has a USB output port for high speed data transfer between the camcorder and a PC, as well as S-Video output, but it does not have a Firewire port. The

The Hitachi DZ-MV580A uses smaller DVD-R or DVD RAM discs, which are 8cm in size, and hole 1.4GB of data, which is equal to about 30 minutes of video. The Hitachi DZ-MV580A DVD Camcorder is capable of playing back from the camcorder to the TV or DVD player, using A/V cables. It also features ports for a microphone and headphones.

Battery Life

The Hitachi DZ-MV580A uses a DZ-BP14SW Li-ion battery. When operating the camcorder normally, without using the viewfinder or LCD display, the battery has life of about 2 3/4 hours before needing to be recharged. An AC adapter/charger is included with the camcorder.

Shortcomings

A common complaint from users of the Hitachi DZ-MV580A is that there seem to be slight problems with the automatic exposure adjustment, but it is nominal. The most common drawback among users is the location of the battery. It protrudes from the back of the camera, and tends to make the viewfinder less accessible.

Conclusion

If features and quality are important to you, the Hitachi DZ-MV580A DVD Camcorder is the way to go. Using all of the latest technology, and incorporating powerful features, this camcorder is professional grade, but user friendly enough for amateurs as well. The Hitachi DZ-MV580A DVD Camcorder is well worth the investment.
