5 Powerful Video Editing Tips
You Need To Know

Are you looking for some good video editing tips? If you're just starting out in digital video editing, it can be tough if you don't have guidance.

I remember when I started, I could hard open up my video editing program!

In this article, let's take a look at some must-know video editing tips that will help you become a better videographer.

The aim is to make movies - movies with impact and which make your audience go wow! In order to achieve this, there are some basic video editing rules that you should always keep in mind. Let's look at them now ...

Learn powerful video editing tips to improve your video production

1. Learn To Shoot Properly

One of my first video editing tips is to always learn to shoot properly. Remember, the video you edit and add special effects to is only as good as the original shots you made. If the original shots are boring, or as off-angle, no amount of editing will make it better. So be sure you learn the mechanics of videography and cinematography, how to shoot with a tripod and also how to compose your shots.

2. Get A Good Video Editing Program

Another of the first video editing tips I have for you is to get a good video editing program. Remember, the video editor you use is the tool of your trade. Get familiar with it, use it often and learn its ins and out.

Master it. Master every nook and cranny there is about the program. For novices, the best program that provides a good balance of beginner features and advanced customization functionalities is Corel Video Studio. You can also check out Adobe Premiere Elements which provides a very rich feature set too.

For beginners, I'd recommend Movavi, which is a fantastic product with loads of fun video editing options.

3. Master Lighting

This aspect is so important I decided to have it as a tip on its own. To master lighting is on of the biggest video editing tips I can give you. Just like in photography, light is what makes and breaks a video shoot.

Shoot the bride in dark light or film the cathedral without a good light source -and you'll see that no amount of video editing will save your movie. Light is the medium through which you record your videos - learn how it works - from lighting sources to positioning of lights, as well as how exposures and shutter speeds of your video camera affect the results you see on your video.

Here's a great book on lighting for digital video that I recommend.

4. Master A Post-Production Workflow

If you speak to a professional video editor, he or she will tell they have a "post-production workflow". What is this? Well, it refers to a pre-defined set of procedures made during video editing to clean out issues with the shots. A good video editor will import the video into the computer, launch the video editing program of choice, then proceed to:

  • Arrange the clips in the timeline
  • Remove poor shots or shots of little importance
  • Add transition effects when locations change
  • Add text or other effects to embellish important shots
  • Add music or audio to enhance scenes
  • Preview the entire clip to ensure everything looks good
  • Author and burn the video into a DVD

Create your own post-production workflow and you'll naturally become a better video editor.

5. Attend A Video Editing Course

No matter what you do on your own, or how you muck around with software, it will not replace a professional video editing course. I suggest you sign up for one of these courses and if possible, get professionally certified. Adobe Premiere Pro is one such software where you can get yourself certified. By doing so, you're assured you've learnt the skills required and also make yourself more attractive to employers and clients in this field.

Here's an article on digital video editing courses you'd want to check out.

And that's it! Hopefully the above has helped you understand the best video editing tips that are at the top of my mind. Over time, as you get better, you'll begin to amass your own set of video editing tricks. Share those with me when you get the time! Good luck!
